It seems fitting to start off this particular blog with notes on a poem by the amazing Maya Angelou. Copyright forbids that I set out the whole poem here, and I want to respect Maya's rights - but I'm sure neither she nor her publishers would object to my saying that these are words that we should write in our hearts, and in the hearts of those we meet.
Please do visit Maya's official web site: http://mayaangelou.com/. Maya is renowned for her depth of insights, her lyrical writing, and her wisdom - which can only come from Christ Himself. She has blessed women around the world with her work; long may she continue!
This particular poem is titled "Beautiful Christian Sister" and is written in couplets. I am sure I can quote just these verses, without offending copyright:
'A woman's heart should be so hidden in Christ
That a man should have to seek Him first to find her.'
What an incredible quote for we women to carry in our hearts! And another verse:
When I say... 'I am a Christian' I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide.
Maya turned 80 recently, and the realisation that soon God will bring her into His rest, and we will lose her on this earth, wrenched my soul. But her inspiration will live on in the legacy she leaves behind, and women (and men) around the globe will continue to celebrate her life for centuries to come.
May we all seek to have a heart that shines as Maya's has done - a light to the world. Thank you, Maya!
